Two Things People Mean by Crop

People who search for a way to crop a YouTube video usually want one of two different things, and the tools for them are different.

Crop in time and crop in space
Kind of cropWhat changesTypical reasonWhere to do it
Crop in timeThe start and the end. The picture is untouchedKeep one moment of a long videoHere on YTCut: set the in and out points and download
Crop in spaceThe edges of the picture. A wide frame becomes tall or squareMake a vertical clip for Shorts, TikTok or ReelsThe Make a Short switch, which opens the Shorts Studio at Vid2Shorts, our sister tool
Crop the soundOnly the audio of the selected part is keptA quote, a song section, a podcast momentHere on YTCut: choose MP3, M4A or WAV

Most searches are the first kind. Someone has a long video, they want a minute of it, and "crop" is the word that came to mind. If that is you, the next section is all you need. If you want a tall picture for a phone, skip to the section on cropping the frame.

Crop a YouTube Video in Time

  1. Paste the YouTube link on the YTCut homepage. The timeline loads with frames from the whole video.
  2. Drag the start handle to where the part you want begins, and the end handle to where it stops. Or type the times.
  3. Check the selected duration, which updates as you drag, so you know the length before anything is cut.
  4. Choose MP4 for video, and the highest quality your plan allows.
  5. Download. Only the part you selected is fetched and cut, so a short crop from a long video is quick.

The cut lands where you put it, to the second, rather than jumping to the nearest keyframe a few seconds away, which is the most common complaint about quick croppers. The online video trimmer page explains why keyframes make some tools cut early or late.

Crop the Frame to Vertical

A YouTube video is almost always 16:9, wider than it is tall. A phone screen held upright is 9:16. Cropping one into the other is not resizing: it means choosing which part of the picture survives, and most of it does not.

Two thirds of the picture going away is fine for a single person talking to the camera and a disaster for anything else. The question is never whether to lose the sides, it is which part of the middle to keep. On YTCut, the Make a Short switch under the timeline sends your selected moment to the Shorts Studio at Vid2Shorts, our sister tool, where the vertical window does three things a plain crop does not:

  • It looks for the speaker. A centre crop of an interview is the empty gap between two people. The Studio places the window over the person instead, and you can drag it if it guesses wrong.
  • It can fit instead of crop. For a slide, a game screen or a wide shot where the edges matter, the whole picture can sit inside the tall frame with a blurred copy of itself filling the space above and below.
  • It exports at 1080 by 1920, the size the vertical platforms expect, with captions if you want them.

Make a vertical crop, step by step

  1. Set the moment on YTCut: paste the link and drag the in and out points.
  2. Turn on Make a Short under the timeline. The moment opens in the Shorts Studio with the 9:16 frame already applied.
  3. Check the window. It is placed over the speaker. Drag it if the important part of the picture is a screen, a product or a second person.
  4. Choose fill or fit. Fill crops to the window; fit keeps the whole picture with a blurred backdrop above and below.
  5. Export a 1080 by 1920 MP4, with word by word captions if you want them.

Why a Cropped Picture Can Look Soft

A vertical crop of a 1080p video keeps a strip 608 pixels wide. To fill a 1080 pixel wide phone screen, that strip has to be enlarged by a little under double, and enlarged video looks softer than the original. Cropping a 4K source avoids most of it, because the same strip is 1215 pixels wide and is reduced rather than enlarged.

So the best crop starts from the best source. Choose the highest resolution the original offers and your plan allows; a crop of 4K looks sharp on a phone in a way a crop of 720p never will. Our video quality guide has the numbers for each resolution.

Crop Just the Audio

Sometimes the picture does not matter at all: a line from a speech, a chorus, a sound effect, a question from a podcast. Choose MP3, M4A or WAV and YTCut keeps only the audio of the part you selected. Across every clip cut here since May, 10.4% were MP3 and a few dozen more were M4A or WAV.

What People Actually Crop

Across 26,341 clips cut on YTCut between 23 May and 25 October 2026, most were short, and most came from near the start of their video. The two tables below are the honest picture of what a crop of a YouTube video usually is.

First party totals from the YTCut clip log: every completed clip from 23 May to 25 October 2026, 26,341 clips from 21,777 different videos. Percentages are of completed clips.

Six in ten crops start within the first ten minutes, and one in eight starts more than an hour in. The long tail is podcasts, lectures and archived live streams, where cropping is the only sensible way to get at one moment without downloading hours of video.

What Cropping Cannot Do

  • It cannot add detail. A crop of a 360p video is still 360p, just smaller. Start from the best source available.
  • It cannot remove a watermark or a burned in caption without also removing the part of the picture it sits on. If the mark is in the middle, it stays.
  • It cannot cut a stream that is still live. There is no finished video until the stream ends and YouTube publishes the recording.
  • It does not change who owns the video. A cropped clip of someone else's work is still their work. Our guide to clip copyright covers what that means.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I crop a YouTube video and save it?

Paste the link on YTCut, drag the start and end handles to the part you want, choose MP4 and a quality, and download. Your first clip is free and needs no account.

Can I crop a YouTube video to vertical for Shorts or TikTok?

Yes. Set the moment on YTCut and turn on Make a Short. It opens the Shorts Studio at Vid2Shorts, our sister tool, which crops to 9:16 at 1080 by 1920, places the window over the speaker, and lets you drag it or fit the whole picture instead.

How much of the picture is lost in a vertical crop?

A 9:16 crop of a 16:9 video keeps 31.6% of the width: 608 of 1920 pixels at 1080p. A square 1:1 crop keeps 56.3%.

Why does my cropped video look blurry?

Because a vertical strip from a 1080p video is enlarged to fill a phone screen. Starting from a 4K source keeps it sharp, since the same strip is then reduced rather than enlarged.

Can I crop just the audio of a YouTube video?

Yes. Choose MP3, M4A or WAV and only the audio of the selected part is downloaded.

How long can a cropped clip be?

Up to 5 minutes without an account, 10 minutes with a free account, and 4 hours on Pro.

Does cropping remove watermarks?

Only if the watermark sits in the part of the picture the crop throws away. A mark in the middle of the frame stays.
